Celebration of Life Service Held for Mrs. Dorothy Young

WHITE PLAINS, NY -- A Celebration of Life Servive was held last week for Dorothy G. Young at Mount Hope AME Zion Church in White Plains,

Dorothy G. Young, a longtime resident of White Plains, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2022. She was born on May 30, 1932 to the late Benjamin and Minnie Mitchell in Valhalla, New York.

She was married to the late Clarence (Knobby) Young of New Rochelle, New York. Dorothy was preceded in death by her siblings, the late Benjamin Mitchell, Mabel Chisholm, and Hilda Potillo.

Dorothy graduated from White Plains High School in 1956 and was a member of the Ambassador Drum Corp. She had one of the oldest memberships of Mount Hope AME Zion Church, having started Sunday School when the church was on Winchester Street in White Plains.

She was employed at the Westchester-Putnam Affirmative Action Program (WPAAP) under the late M. Paul Redd, Sr. Dorothy served as Secretary of the Kensico Cooperative Inc. We can’t forget her modeling days where she modeled for The Models Guild of Westchester and The Freelancers.

Dorothy was a devout member of Mount Hope AME Zion Church where she served as a Financial Secretary; a member of the Steward Board; President of the “Do Something About It” committee; member of the Stoney Hill Cemetery Committee, and a member of the Christian Education Board.

Dorothy, affectionately known as Dot, Dottie, and Aunt Dot, was an avid reader and a strong advocate for education. She also loved music, game shows and reality TV. Although soft-spoken, she conveyed her point with class and humility. Her warm and humorous personality made everyone feel special and welcomed. She was selfless and generous and loved immensely by her family, friends and the community.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, a god-daughter and many friends.
